Awards Presented at Photo London 2016 to Thibault Brunet & More

On the opening day of the Fair, the jury for the Photo London John Kobal Residency Award toured the gallery booths of Photo London to see the works of the 28 emerging artists nominated for this year’s award. The winner, Thibault Brunet (represented by Heinzer Reszler) was presented with the award in a special ceremony on Thursday 19 May – the award gives the winning photographer the chance  to complete a two-month residency in New York run by Residency Unlimited. The French photographer won the award for his series  Typologie du Virtuel, which explores France through Google Earth, examining how GPS, telephone and tablets, satellite imagery have changed our use of space.

Speaking of Brunet’s award, Simon Crocker, Chairman of the John Kobal Foundation said: “The John Kobal Foundation was delighted to give this award to Thibault Brunet and his original body of work. Daisuke Yokota, last year’s winner, set a standard that Brunet will surely build on and we’re sure he’ll benefit greatly from his New York stay.”

Alongisde Brunet’s prize, the recipients of the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards and the Mack First Book Award were also named. The First Book Award was presented to Sofia Borges by Michael Mack, for her work The Swamp. For the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards, Fazal Sheikh won Best Photography Book for The Erasure Trilogy and Jacqueline Stewart collected the prize for LA Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema, which she edited with Allyson Field and Jan-Christopher Horak.

The ten winners of the Magnum Photos Graduate Photographers Award were also announced, following judging earlier that day. The winners for 2016 are:
