Contemporary art gallery l’étrangère was founded in 2014 by Joanna Gemes in London's Shoreditch. It represents emerging and mid-career artists. The guiding concept of ‘liquid modernity’ as defined by Zygmunt Bauman, in which the liquid modern man flows through his own life like a tourist, changing places, jobs, spouses, and values, has become a key premise for the gallery program. The gallery aims to present exhibitions that reflect the multinational, cosmopolitan and multicultural fabric of modern urban society by working with artists who explore the political, social and cultural changes of today's increasingly complex and unstable world.
