Alex Amorós: Keep the Faith

Keep The Faith is a curated collection of photographs, video and scene insider accounts exploring the underground Northern Soul music scene around the United Kingdom.

Alex Amorós was the winner of the Underground Scenes category at the prestigious Abbey Road Music Photography Awards with his image depicting a Mod Weekender in Margate. Following his win, Amorós decided to deep dive into the world of Northern Soul; an underground scene which continues to live on to this day in the United Kingdom.

Northern Soul events offer access to rare and underplayed records from 1960s America and attract an ever-increasing and passionate younger following. Amorós has documented five events: Rivoli Ballroom in London, The King George’s Hall in Blackburn, Soul Stompers Club at the New Albany in London, Deptford Northern Soul at Earth Hackney in London and Bristol Northern Soul at the Old Market Assembly in Bristol.

“For this project I have wanted to capture the heart and soul of the movement and to celebrate the people who are keeping it alive whilst coming together a new generation of movers. It is a social study of a subculture; a community recognisable by its music and fashion.” – Alex Amorós

Part of Alex’s prize for winning the Underground Scenes category at the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards was a week-long mentorship programme with former Abbey Road Photographer-In-Residence, Simon Wheatley, to discuss the development and direction of the project over several sessions.

“I am grateful to Abbey Road for the opportunities the award has given for me. Simon’s guidance has been one of the best things about the project. I not only admire his work, but he has been a wonderful mentor throughout this project”.– Alex Amorós
