Maximilian Virgili: Umarèl

Umarèl – Maximilian Virgili
New Dimension

In Umarèl, Berlin-based photographer Maximilian Virgili draws on an Italian archetype – the elderly observer who watches construction sites – to explore urban change and quiet attention. His photographs of Berlin’s scaffolds, concrete shells and temporary fences trace the city’s perpetual state of becoming. Working within a restrained palette and deliberate rhythm, Virgili invites the viewer to dwell on the spaces between progress and pause. The series speaks to a broader meditation on observation itself: to look, to wait, and to recognise meaning in the unfinished. Accompanied by an essay by Ben Goulder, Umarèl reflects a contemplative engagement with place, attentive to both humour and melancholy.
