England & Co was founded in 1987 and has established an independent, historically aware identity. This reflects the research-based curatorial approach of gallery director/curator, art historian Jane England.
The gallery programme explores 20th and 21st-century art history, from the esoteric to the avant-garde, together with recent projects that have explored the avant-garde of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, as at Frieze London in 2018.
Exhibitions have reappraised significant artists who had become marginalized over time, leading directly to museum acquisitions and renewed curatorial attention. Other exhibitions have been in the vanguard of revisiting moments in 20th-century British art history. Photography has been embedded in the gallery’s exhibition programme, and many exhibitions have included photography related to conceptual process or documenting performance, and this has been reflected in the gallery’s presentations at Photo London over the past three years.
England & Co has a long and extensive history of sales of 20th and 21st-century works to public collections in the UK and internationally, and regularly loans works to exhibitions at museums and institutions worldwide.
