About the speakers:
Bastiaan Woudt (NL) has seen a meteoric rise within the world of contemporary photography. After starting his own photography practice from scratch a mere five years ago, with no experience or formal training, he has developed into a photographer with his own distinct signature style – abstract yet sharp, with a strong focus on detail. As a student of the history of photography through devouring photobooks and visiting museums and fairs, Woudt has a strong preference for classic subjects, such as portraits and nudes, and we see references to illustrious periods from photography throughout his work, such as Surrealism and the documentary photography of the 1960s and 70s. But through sophisticated use of both camera and post-production techniques, which he has taught himself by heavily experimenting with both, he gives his own graphic and wholly contemporary twist to the classical.
Ben Burdett is the founder of the Atlas Gallery, which first opened its doors in 1994 and is one of the foremost galleries worldwide dealing exclusively in photography. The gallery embraces photography in all its forms, with extensive holdings of work by 20th Century masters as well as representing a diverse range of contemporary photographers. From classic vintage photography, photojournalism and fashion to experimental and art photography, Atlas offers extensive expertise on every aspect of the medium. The gallery deals in high quality works by a comprehensive list of the most famous and highly regarded photographers of the last one hundred years. The gallery has the sole representation of a significant proportion of the photographers on this list and thus has unparalleled and exclusive access to many rare and singular works. Atlas hosts approximately six exhibitions a year and has a presence at major international art fairs. Ben Burdett, set up the gallery after a successful career in fine art and antiquarian books in London, becoming one of the top experts in nineteenth-century travel and exploration. Prior to this, he qualified as a master bookbinder at the London College of Printing. During the 1980’s Ben travelled extensively over a period of several years including making several overland journeys through Asia and the Himalayas and it was here that his love of photography began, carting an ancient Russian Zenit SLR up and across mountain and desert. Ben studied for an MA in English at Christ Church College Oxford and grew up in the Lake District in a residential music school.
