From Atwood to the Void: Wanda Orme & Suzanne Sykes in Conversation
Desire is policed, but nature is abundant.
For this evening event, Photo London Academy is delighted to present a conversation between Wanda Orme and Creative Director of The Sunday Times Style, Suzanne Sykes. The conversation will focus on Orme’s recent commission by the Sunday Times Style to create an art work inspired by Margaret Atwood’s latest novel, The Testaments. Vulnerability, resonance and desire are central to Orme’s process and these themes can be found throughout her work, from her collaboration with Bjork, to her Prix Pictet nominated imagery of Salton Sea in California.
Wanda Orme is a multi-disciplinary visual artist and writer whose work explores desire, vulnerability, resonance and relationships between human and non-human bodies. Born on the Isle of Man, raised in London and lost in California, she has most recently returned to London after living and working in New York City. She currently lives between London and Naples, Italy. Her photographic works and writings have been published and exhibited in both Europe and North America, including her first book of poetry, The Becoming Light of Water. In 2019 Wanda was nominated for the Prix Pictet for her photographs of the Salton Sea, California’s largest saline lake.
Suzanne Sykes has been Creative Director of The Sunday Times Style magazine for the last two years. She was previously Creative director of ELLE magazine UK and worked for five years in NY at Hearst magazines Marie Claire US. Sykes launched both Grazia magazine and Marie Claire in the UK. She has been awarded the D&AD yellow pencil, the PPA designer of the year and SPD awards for ELLE UK and Marie Claire US.
