First Génération, a talk between Carolina Arantes and Azu Nwagbogu

14th February 2023

In 2014, Carolina Arantes began First Génération, a long-term project that focused on the first generation of French women from West Africa. In Photo London’s latest talk, the award-winning Brazilian photographer talks to the Founder and Director of African Artists’ Foundation and Lagos Photo Festival Azu Nwagbgu, who was also the curator of the book and accompanying exhibition. Carolina will share how this project came to life and how she documented the daily life of French women of African heritage in their search for a solid mixed identity. Speaking about the work she says: ‘First Generation can be seen as a link between three generations: the immigrant parents, the women who participate in this project and their children, already anchored in a French identity and who will have, through this project, archives of their ancestors’ experiences in France.’
