23rd April 2024

Join journalist Precious Adesina in conversation with Photo London 2024 artist Satchel Lee for a discussion on hair, performativity, self-portraiture, and Lee’s evocative series “X-Pressions.” The photo series will be presented at Cierra Britton Gallery’s booth in Discovery in May, the first time the American artist has exhibited in the UK.

Born and raised in New York City, Satchel Lee stands as a dynamic photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist. Her distinctive body of work transcends conventional boundaries, and is primarily anchored in the realm of portraiture.

Collaborating with others in her community and frequently turning the lens on herself, Lee crafts imagery that celebrates the everyday. Her work, often surreal and thought-provoking, serves as poignant snapshots of contemporary life. They not only (re)examine memories tinged with ambiguity but also delve into profound questions surrounding identity, existence, familial ties, and the enduring legacy we leave behind.

A proud alumna of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Lee continues to deepen her artistic journey. Currently, she is honing her craft further as she pursues an MFA in Photography at the esteemed School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
