Sam Wright: Pillar to Post

Courtesy of Gost

In Pillar to Post, photographer Sam Wright offers a poignant and empathetic portrait of Traveller and Romani Gypsy communities across the UK and Ireland. Spurred by a personal connection to his great-grandmother’s Irish Traveller heritage, Wright embarked on a two-year journey to document the lives, traditions, and challenges of these often-stigmatised groups.

Beginning at the historic Appleby Horse Fair, Wright was warned of theft and trouble but found instead a warm welcome and genuine connections. His photographs reveal the deep bonds within multi-generational families and the coexistence of tradition and modernity. From vibrant fairs to intimate family portraits, Wright’s work challenges the stereotypes perpetuated by media depictions and sheds light on the resilience and vibrancy of these communities.

Accompanied by essays from Damian LeBas, the book examines the prejudices faced by Travellers and the urgent need for greater understanding and respect. Pillar to Post is a compelling visual record and a call for societal change, offering a rare glimpse into the beauty and complexity of a culture under threat.
