Susan Derges: Mortal Moon
Inspired by the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, a new commission from photographer Susan Derges comes to the Queen’s House, Greenwich.
Using both analogue and digital techniques the work, titled Mortal Moon, unpacks the Armada Portrait’s symbolism, with a particular focus on the Moon.
These four newly commissioned works, will be displayed in the Queen’s Presence Chamber, alongside the iconic Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. The display will also feature a celestial globe, dating from 1551.
About the artist
Having trained as a painter, Susan Derges is best known for her pioneering method of cameraless photography, by immersing photographic paper directly into water.
Mortal Moon will also coincide with the National Maritime Museum’s major exhibition The Moon (19 July 2019 – 5 January 2020). The exhibition will present a cultural and scientific story of humanity’s relationship with the Moon.
