Susan Derges: Mortal Moon

Wednesday 20 March - Monday 20 January 2019
The Queen's House

Inspired by the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, a new commission from photographer Susan Derges comes to the Queen’s House, Greenwich.

Using both analogue and digital techniques the work, titled Mortal Moon, unpacks the Armada Portrait’s symbolism, with a particular focus on the Moon.

These four newly commissioned works, will be displayed in the Queen’s Presence Chamber, alongside the iconic Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. The display will also feature a celestial globe, dating from 1551.

About the artist

Having trained as a painter, Susan Derges is best known for her pioneering method of cameraless photography, by immersing photographic paper directly into water.

Mortal Moon will also coincide with the National Maritime Museum’s major exhibition The Moon (19 July 2019 – 5 January 2020). The exhibition will present a cultural and scientific story of humanity’s relationship with the Moon.

Mortal Moon Opens 20 March 2019.
