Founded in November 2014 by Joanna Gemes, l'étrangère is a contemporary art gallery based in East London. Guided by the idea of "liquid modernity" as defined by Zygmnunt Bauman, the gallery focuses on experimental contemporary artistic practices that use strong conceptual underpinning where materiality and process play important roles, employing innovative approaches to traditional techniques. In addition to the exhibition program, the gallery also serves as a discursive platform, through an on-going series of talks and events.
