Aperture presents: Martin Parr through the Photobook

Photo London’s spotlighted photographer for the 2023 edition of the fair, Martin Parr, will discuss his well-known interest in the photobook—from his ever-expanding personal collection of photobooks, to the book form as a vehicle for his own photographs. Parr will present a few of his classic monographs, including The Cost of Living, Common Sense, Life’s a Beach, and Death by Selfie, before a conversation with Aperture’s creative director Lesley Martin about his role as a champion of the photobook as an autonomous art form.

Photo London’s 2023 Master of Photography, is a key figure in the world of photography, recognised as a brilliant satirist of contemporary life. He has published over 100 photobooks, including Bad Weather (1982), Common Sense (1999), The Last Resort (2009), The Non-Conformists (2013), and Small World (2022). His work has been exhibited worldwide, including at NRW-Forum Düsseldorf; Barbican Art Gallery and Photographers’ Gallery, London; National Science and Media Museum, Bradford, UK; McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City; and Rencontres d’Arles, France. Parr is a member of Magnum Photos.
Lesley Martin is creative director of Aperture and founding publisher of The PhotoBook Review. Her writing on photography has been published in Aperture, IMA magazine, and Foam, among other publications, and she has edited more than one hundred books of photography, including On the Beach by Richard Misrach; Illuminance by Rinko Kawauchi; LaToya Ruby Frazier: The Notion of Family; Zanele Muholi: Hail the Dark Lioness; The New Black Vanguard by Antwaun Sargent; Sara Cwynar: Glass Life; and Zora J Murff: True Colors. Martin cofounded the Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards in 2012, and received the Royal Photographic Society award for outstanding achievement in Photographic Publishing in 2020. She is currently a visiting critic at the Yale University Graduate School of Art.
