In a challenging economic climate, London’s artists are forging new models for the production and distribution of photography. In this panel, Ben Goulder, publisher and director of New Dimension; Gareth McConnell, artist and director of Sorika; and Amber Pinkerton, photographer and founder of JA Editorial Archive, discuss navigating an insecure funding landscape and a lack of access to space, in order to develop projects rooted in community solidarity and collective joy. Gareth McConnell (b. 1972, Northern Ireland) is an artist and publisher living in London. He is founder and editor-in-chief of Sorika (est. 2013) an ongoing collaborative art project and print sales company. His work has been featured and written about in internationally recognised art and news publications such as Aperture, Frieze, The Guardian / Observer and The New York Times and has been included in major survey art shows.
Ben Goulder is a London-based publisher, distributor, and consultant. He spent four years as Head of Media Strategy at Dazed Media (Dazed, AnOther Magazine, Nowness) before leaving in late 2022 to consult at publications, including Vice, i-D, Refinery29, The Face, and Rolling Stone. In 2023, he founded New Dimension, a platform providing distribution and marketing services to the arts and independent publishers. Goulder has published independently and exhibited around the world at various galleries, including Tate Modern, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Beaux-Arts, Paris.
Amber Pinkerton is a London-based photographic, moving image and conceptual artist born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. In 2022 Pinkerton featured in her first museum show, ‘Female View: Female Fashion Photographers from Modernity to the Digital Age’ at Kunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck, Germany & Museum Schloss Moyland, Germany and ‘Black Venus’ at Fotografiska, New York which in 2023 tours to The Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco and Somerset House, London. Pinkerton also featured in The New Black Vanguard (Curated by Antwaun Sargent), Saatchi Gallery, London, UK which previously toured to Musee de beaux-arts, Le Locle, Switzerland and Fotografiska, Stockholm, Sweden and Rencontres d’Arles, Arles, France.
