Nick Waplington’s body of work is marked by eclecticism and juxtaposition, using both traditional and new media to push the boundaries of contemporary art practice. While best known as a photographer, he also works extensively with painting, video, computer-generated imagery, sculpture, and found material. Waplington’s publication, Living Room (1991), chronicled the domestic world of working-class Britain; his other monographs include Other Edens (1993), Safety in Numbers (1995), You Love Life (2005), and Made Glorious Summer (2012). Waplington has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, including group shows at the Brooklyn Museum, Tate Modern, and Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In 2015, Waplington was the first living British artist to have a solo photographic exhibition in the main galleries of the Tate, London. He is the recipient of the European Photo Award at the Rencontre D’Arles Photo Festival (1990), and an ICP Infinity Award (1993), and he represented the UK at the 2001 Venice Biennale.

 

 

 

Simon Baker is Director of MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris). He was formerly Senior Curator, International Art (Photography) Tate, and Associate Professor of Art History at Nottingham University. He has published widely on photography and contemporary art including the monograph George Condo: Painting Reconfigured (Thames and Hudson, 2015).
