Photo London x Hahnemühle Student Award 2024

Launched in 2023, the Photo London x Hahnemühle Student Award is an exciting opportunity for students enrolled in photography degrees at UK universities. The aim of the award is to bring developing photographers’ portfolios to international attention and support early-career talent within the industry. Now in its second year, this initiative builds on Photo London’s ongoing commitment to supporting and investing in emerging photographic artists, which is evident in the Fair’s Discovery section and the Photo London x Nikon Emerging Photographer of the Year Award.

 

How It Works

Faculty members at UK universities offering photography courses are invited to nominate students from these courses. The nominated students are then invited to propose a specific Hahnemühle paper that would best suit the printing of their work. The award’s judging panel will then shortlist up to 10 nominated artists whose work will be showcased at Photo London (16 – 19 May 2024). The panel selects one overall winner who is announced at a special ceremony at the Fair on the Saturday (18 May 2024).

Judging Chair, Fiona Shields, Head of Photography, The Guardian

Fiona has over twenty years’ picture editing experience across a range of newspaper titles as well as being a curator, speaker on photojournalism and mentor within the photography community. She was Picture Editor of the Guardian for ten years before taking up the role of Head of Photography for the Guardian News and Media Group. Throughout her career she has been involved in the coverage of some of the most historic news stories of our time including the events surrounding 9/11, conflicts around the world, large-scale natural disasters, and the humanitarian crises resulting from the growing refugee numbers across the globe.

In addition she has judged numerous high profile photographic awards including World Press Photo Awards, the Sony World Photography Awards, The Carmignac Photojournalism Award, The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and is a regular nominator for the prestigious Prix Pictet Prize.

 

 

Professor Steve McLeod, Photographic Artist and Director, Metro Imaging

Steve is an award-winning Creative Director who has been at the forefront of photographic imaging for almost thirty years. He is a Director of Metro Imaging, one of Europe’s leading imaging production companies with a global reach offering a comprehensive range of services for exhibition and collecting markets. In his role he collaborates with a vast network of international clients including museums, galleries, and individual creatives.

Steve is a practicing artist represented by Black Box Projects, regularly exhibiting, his works are held in both private and public institutions including the V&A in London. He is also a commissioned artist and ambassador for Hospital Rooms Arts Mental Health charity.

Steve is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Suffolk; former Trustee and Deputy Chair of QEST, External Assessor and External Moderator at RGU Aberdeen. He runs an established mentorship programme and is a regular judge on international panels.

In 2012 Steve was presented with a Royal Warrant from HRH the Prince of Wales for services to industry and education. 

 

 

Tracy Marshall-Grant, Arts Director, Curator & Producer, Northern Narratives

Tracy Marshall- Grant is an Arts Director, Curator & Producer specializing in the production of photography exhibitions, festivals, education, and archive projects. She was previously Deputy Director of the Centre for British Photography and Director of Development for the Royal Photographic Society. She directed the inaugural Bristol Photo Festival and LOOK Photo Biennial 2019 in Liverpool and is currently developing a new Photo Festival in Wales for 2025. Tracy has also been Director of Development at Open Eye Gallery Liverpool and Executive Director at Belfast Exposed Gallery.

Tracy is Senior Producer and Director of Northern Narratives, the non-venue-based photography production company specializing in archive exhibitions and long-term archive development projects. Within this role she is currently developing, amongst other projects, the retrospective of renowned photojournalist Tom Stoddart and is the curator of the award-winning Chris Killip touring retrospective. Tracy is also Studio Director for photographer Ken Grant.

Tracy is associate and guest lecturer on professional practice for the BA and MA photography courses at several colleges and universities in the UK. She is an advisor, selector and judge for a number of photography awards including the British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain and the Ian Parry Grant.

 

 

Tim Clark, Editor/Curator, 1000 Words

Tim Clark is Editor in Chief of 1000 Words and together with running the magazine he is Artistic Director for Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia, Italy, alongside Walter Guadagnini, Director of CAMERA, Torino and Luce Lebart, curator, historian and researcher for the Archive of Modern Conflict.

Clark has been involved in a wide range of projects: curatorial advisor for the Discovery section of Photo London 2022 and 2023; adjunct curator on Masculinities: Liberation through Photography (2020-22) at the Barbican Centre London, an exhibition which travelled to Gropius-Bau Berlin, Les Rencontres d’Arles and FOMU Antwerp; guest curator at the Ci.CLO Bienal 2021 with the exhibition titled The Horizon is Moving Nearer for the Portuguese Center of Photography, Porto; curator of Mutable: Multiple, Derby QUAD, FORMAT International Photography Festival; and guest curator of London Art Fair’s Photo50 section with Who’s looking at the family, now? (all 2019).

Prior to this, he held posts as Artistic Director of Photo Oxford 2017, together with Greg Hobson; and while Associate Curator at Media Space, Science Museum, London, he organised Julia Margaret Cameron: Influence and Intimacy (2015) and Gathered Leaves: Photographs by Alec Soth (2015–18), an exhibition which travelled to National Media Museum, Bradford, Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki, FOMU Antwerp and Deichtorhallen Hamburg. He has also curated numerous solo exhibitions of artists’ work including Mónica de Miranda, Simon Roberts, Lebohang Kganye, Raymond Meeks, Noémie Goudal, Jeff Mermelstein, Soham Gupta, Carmen Winant, Hoda Afshar, Guanyu Xu, Seiichi Furuya, Ken Grant, Yelena Yemchuk, Max Pinckers and others.

 

 

Lisa Springer, Curator of Photography Touring Exhibitions, Victoria and Albert Museum

Lisa Springer is photography curator with a wide expertise, ranging from the history of photographic exhibitions to international contemporary fine art practice. She has worked in several major European museums over the past ten years, and since 2019 she has been Curator of Photography Touring Exhibitions at the V&A, London, where she leads the programme of special touring exhibitions, including Arresting Beauty: Julia Margaret Cameron and Known and Strange: Photographs from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Lisa also contributes to exhibitions in the V&A Photography Centre, working as part of a curatorial team responsible for one of the world’s most significant photography collections.

Before joining the V&A, Lisa was Manager of the prestigious Prix Pictet Photography Award. She ran the ambitious global touring exhibitions programme for four years, collaborating with 50 leading photographers and 31 venues, from New York to Tokyo.

She studied Art History and Cultural Studies in Hildesheim and Paris before being awarded a coveted place on the two-year training programme for photography curators run by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation, Germany.

Lisa acts as an invited juror and portfolio reviewer at international events and has written essays for a number of exhibition catalogues, books and magazines.

 

 

Bindi Vora, Photographic Artist, Curator, Autograph, & Associate Lecturer in Photography

Bindi Vora is an interdisciplinary photographic artist of Kenyan-Indian heritage, Associate Lecturer at London College of Communication and Curator at Autograph a London-based non-profit arts charity that explores issues of identity, representation, human rights and social justice through photography. 

Since joining Autograph, she has curated Hélène Amouzou: Voyages (2023) Eric Gyamfi: Fixing Shadows – Julius and I (2023), Poulomi Basu: Fireflies (2022), co-curated Sasha Huber: You Name It (2022) Care I Contagion I Community ­– Self & Other (2021-2022); Lola Flash: [sur]passing and Maxine Walker: Untitled (both 2019); published a series artist conversations with Sasha Huber, Mónica Alcázar-Duarte, Maryam Wahid, Tobi Alexandra Falade, David Uzochukwu amongst others.

She has independently curated Poulomi Basu: Centralia for Rencontres d’Arles – Louis Roederer Discovery Award (2020); her writing has appeared in publications by Maryam Wahid Zaibuinnisa (MAC, 2022); Another Country: British Documentary Photography Since 1945 (Thames & Hudson); FOAM and British Journal of Photography, participating in public programmes for Tate, GRAIN Photo Hub, The Photographers’ Gallery, The Paul Mellon Centre amongst others.

 

The Prize

In addition to reaching an international audience by presenting their work at Photo London, the shortlisted artists will be invited to one of Hahnemühle’s UK-certified print studios to oversee the production of their exhibition prints. All shortlisted artists will receive VIP passes for the fair and travel to the Fair for the special ceremony on Saturday 18 May 2024.

The winner will receive a trip to the Hahnemühle mill in Germany and the printing of 5-10 artworks on their preferred Hahnemühle papers, either at the Hahnemühle UK office or at a Hahnemühle Certified Studio.
