Steven Meisel: Master of Photography 2026

Photo London’s Master of Photography for 2026 is the legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel.
Despite a prolific career that has shaped the visual language of contemporary fashion, Steven Meisel has remained one of the most elusive figures in photography. Known for producing an extraordinary volume of work, including at one point 28 covers for Vogue in a single year, Meisel has rarely exhibited publicly and has published very little. His decision to present a body of work at Photo London marks a rare and significant moment.
Presented as part of the Fair, Meisel’s exhibition will focus on a series of portraits made in London, revisiting the city that played a pivotal role in his early career. His first professional assignment in London followed his collaboration with Madonna on the landmark book Sex, a project that afforded him an unprecedented level of creative freedom and scale.

Working across locations including Spitalfields, the Docklands, Notting Hill and Portobello Road, Meisel captured a version of London defined by instinct, attitude and disruption. These portraits reflect a city in motion, shaped by a restless, anarchic energy that would come to define a generation of fashion imagery.
Central to Meisel’s practice is an acute sensitivity to people. His ability to recognise presence, often before it is fully formed, has been instrumental in shaping the careers of some of the most significant figures in fashion. “I think I’m good with discovering people, whether or not they are a model. I see things in them that they might not see.”
This instinct was evident in his collaboration with Isabella Blow on Anglo Saxon Attitude for British Vogue, where he cast a new wave of faces drawn from London’s social and creative circles. Among them was Stella Tennant, whose singular presence left a lasting impression. Alongside Tennant, figures including Plum Sykes, Honor Fraser, Lady Louise Campbell and Bella Freud embodied the raw, irreverent spirit of the time.

Photographed in pubs, alleyways and along canal paths, these works capture a distinctly London sensibility, where fashion collides with everyday life and conventional codes are dismantled. Directed with precision yet charged with spontaneity, Meisel’s portraits remain a defining study of style as attitude rather than image.
Speaking about the presentation, Photo London Co-Founder Michael Benson said: “Steven’s agreement to present a group of London portraits is a rare and special thing for the Fair. His work has shaped the visual culture of fashion for decades, yet opportunities to encounter it in an exhibition context are exceptionally uncommon. These images offer a powerful insight into a formative moment in both his career and the visual identity of London.”
