Sly Morikawa’s Mayuri is the latest collaboration between the artist and her subject, photographed over two weekends in Chiba, a coastal prefecture outside Tokyo. Made between late 2024 and early 2025, the book offers a concentrated portrait of Mayuri through moments of leisure, performance and private exchange.

Morikawa’s photographs are attentive to intimacy, beauty and self-presentation, balancing softness with a more complex sense of desire and agency. Her practice often moves through the dualities of light and darkness, calm and tension, innocence and subculture, and these concerns shape the atmosphere of Mayuri. Rather than offering a fixed portrait, the book presents a series of encounters in which friendship, pleasure and persona remain in subtle negotiation. Published by Minor Press, Mayuri continues Morikawa’s interest in the fragile space between the observed and the self-fashioned.
