Anima Mundi by Máté Bartha. The Eriskay Connection, 2024.

Anima Mundi (‘world spirit’) draws on Platonic thought, not to prove a universal force, but to explore humanity’s need to believe in one. Máté Bartha examines the hidden anatomy of the metropolis, portraying the city as a ‘second nature’: shaped by humans yet evolving into an autonomous organism beyond their control. This perspective challenges anthropocentric views and proposes a post-human reading of urban space.
Adopting the role of a fictional observer, Bartha wanders like a detective, searching for patterns and hidden connections. Real and staged images from global locations are collaged into an unidentifiable cityscape, where recurring motifs —grids, posters, urban fragments— offer no clear orientation, reflecting the ambiguity of modern life.
Conceived as an obscure encyclopedia, the work echoes enigmatic systems like the Voynich Manuscript, inviting viewers to decode its elusive logic.
