Juan Brenner: FERVOR

Juan Brenner – FERVOR

Eros Publications

Juan Brenner’s FERVOR explores desire as a driving force within the Western Highlands of Guatemala, a region marked by layered histories of violence, faith and cultural transformation. Brenner examines the intersections of Indigenous practices, Catholic traditions and contemporary digital life, presenting a landscape in which multiple belief systems coexist.

The figure of San Simón appears throughout the work as a symbolic focal point. Revered as a mediator between the sacred and the profane, the folk saint becomes a conduit through which questions of resistance, identity and power are explored. Brenner’s photographs move between ritual scenes, everyday gestures and moments shaped by online culture, revealing how devotion adapts to new circumstances.

The book encourages a sustained reading of place. Its deliberate pacing, tactile materials and restrained design support the contemplative quality of the images. Through a combination of portraiture and detail, Brenner traces how longing, attachment and resilience continue to shape collective and individual life in the region.
