Booth Event – Book Signing: Florence Montmare

In Scenes from an Island, artist and photographer Florence Montmare presents her second monograph, a collection of images and texts created between 2014 and 2024 during residencies at the Ingmar Bergman Estate on the Swedish island of Fårö.

Told in three acts and in collaboration with refugees and islanders, Montmare has created scenarios played out against the remote barren cinematic island. The elemental conditions of a landscape, with figures transitioning through, speak to the human condition of displacement and transience; bodies contrasted with the desolate topography of the mountains, the earth, the water, and the air. “During times of global conflict, the relationship to nature is crucial to find meaning and connection. Natural elements are stripped down and laid bare,” Montmare says, “allowing a contemplation of the rocks and sea to function as a mirror, and in reflection, you can see an essence of yourself.”
