An integral part of the Benrido’s mission is to support the continuation of collotype by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2017 competition was won by Stephen Gill who was able to spend two weeks working in Kyoto at the Atelier. Three special prize winners, Bruno V. Roels, Carly Steinbrunn, Paul Cupido and Leticia Ramos, and Master Printers Choice Award Atsunobu Kohira were joined by ten photographers (Edgar Martins, Philip Le Page, Laura Pannack, Mariya Kozhanova, Zeng Ge, Michael Vahrenwald and Scheltens & Abbenes) receiving honourable mentions. All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype portfolio. The catalogue offers a stunning visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects and is hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata rice paper.
