Our discussion will explore and evaluate the contribution of the autochrome to the representation of fashion in this period: whether it challenges and alters stereotypical preconceptions of the colour of dress, its impact on fashion photography, and its place in the so-called ‘chromatic modernity’ of the early twentieth century.

Cally Blackman
Cally Blackman gained an MA in History of Art (Dress) from the Courtauld Institute. She has taught fashion history at Central Saint Martins for over 20 years, lectured widely, and is the author of several books, including The Colour of Clothes: Fashion and Dress in Autochromes 1907-1930, published by Thames and Hudson in March 2025.
Alistair O’Neill
Alistair O’Neill is a writer, curator and professor of Fashion at Central Saint Martins. Recent exhibitions include Exploding Fashion: 2D-3D-3D Animation (MoMu, 2022) and A Hard Man is Good to Find! (The Photographers’ Gallery, 2023.) O’Neill sits on the editorial board of Fashion Theory, and writes regularly for Aperture magazine.
