Join artist Pixy Liao as she discusses her background, work, and influences in conversation with Holly Roussell.

As Liao’s first major museum solo exhibition concludes at Fotografiska New York and prepares to travel to Stockholm in December, they will discuss how the exhibition highlights core themes and the expanded universe of artistic exploration where Liao engages with sculpture, installation and video. Liao will touch on the origins of the Experimental Relationship project, the future of the series, Moro as a muse, and recent reception of her exhibition in New York amidst the challenging environment of 2021.

Born and raised in Shanghai, Pixy Liao (Liao Yijun) is an artist currently residing in New York. Her long-term photo project “Experimental Relationship” challenges conventional ideas of gender dynamics. She also explores female identity in video and sculpture. She has participated in exhibitions internationally, including the Fotografiska, Rencontres d’Arles in Arles, Asia Society, National Gallery of Australia, etc.

Holly Roussell (born 1989, Vermont, USA) is a curator, museologist, and art historian specialising in photography and contemporary art from Asia based between Switzerland and China. Since 2021, she is curator for the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, China. Previously, she served as coordinator of the worldwide travelling exhibitions program, as well as the photography prize, the Prix Elysée, for the Swiss photography museum, the Musée de l’Elysée from 2013-2017. As an independent curator, Roussell has organized more than 20 group and solo exhibitions for festivals, biennale, and museums around the world such as: Folkwang Museum, DE; MUCEM, Marseille, FR; Les Rencontres d’Arles, FR;  Somerset House, London, UK; NGV Melbourne, AUS; Lianzhou Photography Festival, CN; Shanghai Centre of Photography, CN; Auckland Art Gallery, NZ; Fotografiska, USA/SE; MMCA, Seoul, SK and other venues. In 2022, Roussell will join the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea as International Curatorial Researcher in residence.
