Founded in November 2014, l’étrangère is a contemporary art gallery based in Shoreditch, London. The gallery’s ethos is the concept of ‘liquid modernity’ as defined by Zygmunt Bauman, which examines the contemporary society’s state of flux, being uprooted, unstructured and increasingly hostile to ‘the Other’. Defining the current times as ‘software-based modernity’, it addresses complex issues of identity, alienation, sense of belonging, and global environment. l’étrangère showcases contemporary artists of different generations, alongside historical artists, highlighting their relevance within the current context. In addition to the exhibition program, the gallery provides a discursive and educational platform through an on-going series of artist talks, in order to open up an understanding of their practices and introduce them to new audiences.
