Photo London Commissions New Exhibitions for Public Programme
It was announced that Photo London 2016’s public programme will include four new exhibitions and and works, specially commissioned for the fair and presented at Somerset House during Photo London from 19 – 22 May 2016.
Don McCullin: Photo London Master of Photography 2016
The first of these exhibitions will honour the work of legendary war photographer, Don McCullin, who was named today as the Photo London Master of Photography 2016. The exhibition will be presented by Photo London in association with Hamiltons Gallery.
At a press conference this morning, Don McCullin joined Photo London to speak with artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien about his relationship with photography, and why he feels it is important. Visitors to Photo London will have a rare opportunity to hear Don McCullin speak in a public conversation at Somerset House with Tate Photography Curator, Simon Baker on Thursday 19 May 2016.
Walter & Zoniel
As one of a series of Photo London special commissions, two acclaimed young stars of the London art scene, Walter & Zoniel, will transform the eerie underground spaces of the Deadhouse at Somerset House into a giant camera to take the largest ever Ambrotype (or ‘tintype’) portrait as a live ‘happening’ for the opening night of Photo London.
Craigie Horsfield, from the Wilson Centre for Photography
At the Embankment Galleries at Somerset House there will be an exhibition by Turner Prize nominated artist Craigie Horsfield curated by the Wilson Centre for Photography. The Wilson Centre is the private collection of Michael G. Wilson OBE. The Centre loans photographs to museums throughout the world and is delighted to be exhibiting a selection of Horsfield’s photographs from the collection.
Sergey Chilikov: Photoprovocations, from the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow
The celebrated Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow (formerly Moscow House of Photography) is the only museum in Russia to have a specialised programme of festivals and projects. Olga Sviblova, its Director, will curate a special exhibition for Photo London at Somerset House of contemporary Russian photography from Sergey Chilikov.
