England & Co has an established individual identity reflecting the historically aware, research-based curatorial approach of gallery director/curator Jane England. The programme alternates between contemporary art and explorations of 20th century art history, from the esoteric to the avant-garde, with recent projects focused on the 1960s & 1970s.
Many exhibitions reappraise significant artists who became relatively marginalized over time, leading directly to museum acquisitions and renewed curatorial attention. Institutions who have acquired/loaned works from England & Co include Tate, Whitechapel; Hayward; Barbican; Australian National Gallery; Metropolitan Museum, NY; SF MOMA; Smithsonian; MALBA; Guggenheim Museum; and Venice Biennale. Photography is embedded in the gallery’s exhibition programme, including photography related to conceptual process or documentation of performance.
